Consistent Speed with a Strong Finish Afewerki Zeru displayed a remarkable performance at the 2025 Mesa Marathon 10K event. At 27, the Flagstaff resident confidently tackled the race, highlighting his impressive speed and endurance. Starting strong, Afewerki clocked the first mile in 4:53, maintaining the lead in his division and overall. Despite slight variations, his consistent pacing kept him competitive, finishing the race in 28:22 with an average pace of 4:34 per mile. Notable performances included accelerating to a 4:34 pace by the fourth mile and achieving his fastest split in the final mile with a pace of 3:55. Ending strong, he placed fifth overall among 2,107 participants, third in his gender and notably second in his age division. Afewerki’s commitment to maintaining an even tempo throughout the race illustrates effective training. A focus on early race pacing may improve his positioning further in future races.
