Strong Start, Consistent Effort Emerson Sweetnam, aged 16, from 85144, AZ, participated in the 2025 Mesa Marathon in the half marathon event. Her overall elapsed time was 2:02:38, maintaining an average pace of 9:21 min/mile over the 13.1-mile distance. Starting strong, Emerson completed the first mile in 8:37, ranking 9th in her F15-18 division. Her pacing strategy kept her consistent progression in mind, saving energy for later miles. As the race unfolded, Emerson's splits show a slight deceleration, particularly in the later miles. Mile 6 had a notable increase in split time with a 10:10 pace. During this time, she dropped from 14th to 25th in her division. However, her determination was evident, as shown by her effort to maintain a steady pace till the end. Emerson should consider focusing on strategies for maintaining speed in the later stages and perhaps incorporate targeted endurance training.
